The Top 100 Sustainable Destinations were announced last week, with two South African locations making it into the international list.

The list, by Green Destinations, is compiled using the insights of tourism sustainability experts and other specialists.

Criteria for a destination's inclusion on the list include animal ethics, community development, preservation of the environment and cultural conservation.

So which two South African spots made the list?

Firstly, Cape Town was one of the SA destinations which were included.

"Cape Town is bustling with visitors and economic activity. The demand for a more sustainable living has emerged through the demand for more organic products and green businesses. The Table Mountain National Park and the Cape Floral Kingdom are two protected UNESCO world heritage sites within the boundaries of Cape Town," Green Destinations says of the city.

The city was also commended for initiatives to save water.

Also in the Western Cape, the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve was the second SA destination included on the list.

The reserve is located near Gansbaai and has been commended by various international organisations for their sustainability efforts. The property however also manages to include five-star accommodation.

The Grootbos Foundation receives significant income from the lodges and supports the local community through employment and skills training. Grootbos also directs initiatives to protect the environment of the area.

Sustainability in tourism is becoming ever-increasingly important for travellers, with many tourists looking for ethical attractions.
