2016 Beach AFCON Chietain: Lagos Hosting Well, Will Do More

By James Agberebi at Eko Atlantic Beach, Lagos:‎

Chairman, Venue and Facility, 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, Bolaji Yusuf, has expressed satisfaction with level of success recorded in the first three days of the tournament Completesportsnigeria.com reports.‎

Following the completion of the group stage games on Thursday, the tournament will resume on Saturday December  17 with hosts Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal and Egypt slogging it out in the semi-finals.

In his assessment, Yusuf  thumbed up everyone who have been involved in making the tournament a success so far.

He also reserved special praise for the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, for the role he has played in the hosting of the 2016 Beach Soccer AFCON.

"So far, we've not done badly. Though there is room for improvement, but with what we've done, it shows we can host the whole world," Yusuf told Completesportsnigeria.com.

"I will say kudos to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode. He has given support to the LOC and for the first time, they set up an host city committee who did a complimentary service to make sure Lagos is showcased in a positive light, and we have not disappointed the governor.

"I believe Lagos will be a sport destination, particularly talking about beach. And it's not only beach soccer, you can talk about beach volleyball, beach handball. And with the plans being made, there will be beach arenas very soon in Lagos."

On the growth of Beach Soccer in Lagos and the possibility of the state hosting the Beach Soccer World Cup, Yusuf said: "We have a beach soccer league that is being organised by the Lagos FA. And Lagos is among the states in Nigeria to have a beach soccer committee which is putting up a beach soccer league which is not that robust for now.

"But all we have to do is to improve on what we have. And to think that they play beach soccer in Abuja, I believe it will make headway in Lagos."

He added:"In terms of population, resources, both human and financial resources, Lagos can stand among the first four in Africa. And we should be judged by world standard and not just by the Africa Cup of Nations which is a stepping stone.

"So I believe better things are ahead, and who says the next Beach Soccer World Cup cannot be hosted in Lagos."

And on the performance of Nigeria Super Sand Eagles so far in this year's Beach Soccer AFCON Yusuf said:"Like I have said before, we need a lot of improvement. Most of our coaches need to go for refresher courses. Everyday, new techniques and technologies emerge in the game. So we have to refresh our coaches and also we have to make the game popular."
