Does China Dominate Global Investments?

International Trade

December 19th, 2016 | Written by Peter Buxbaum

CHINA WILL ACCOUNT FOR 25 PERCENT OF GLOBAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION BY 2035: This need for energy has sparked Chinese investment across Asia.

  • The U.S. is the largest destination for Chinese FDI in the world, drawing 14 percent since 2005.
  • China became the largest energy consumer and producer in the world in 2011.
  • The Netherlands and the U.S. are the largest investors in Latin America.
  • Overseas investments offers China an opportunity to bolster its own economy, and to leverage its economic strength to increase its influence abroad. Beijing's policies encourage investments in foreign markets and Chinese firms have actively expanded their overseas footprint in recent years.

Natural resource-extraction activities in Africa, Australia, Canada, and Latin America continue to dominate Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI), but Chinese companies have also begun acquiring strategic assets in American and European high-tech sectors.

For all of the talk of China's growing FDI, it still represents a small share compared to investments from the more advanced economies of the United States and Europe, according to a recent report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. China's share of foreign investments in regions like Latin America and Africa are much smaller than its cohorts.

On the other hand, China could emerge as a world leader in international investment, according tot he report, if China's leaders manage to rebalance the Chinese economy toward a consumer-driven and high-end manufacturing model.

Annual Chinese FDI into Latin America and the Caribbean has expanded dramatically over the last several years. Investments totaled $81.55 billion between 2005 and 2015, growing steadily from $430 million in 2006 to $4.87 billion in 2009 and peaking at $24.48 billion in 2010.

But the region accounted for only 10.5 percent of China's total global FDI over the past decade, and China's investment in the region pales in comparison to other actors. Chinese investments constitute one percent of total inflows from all investor countries. The Netherlands and the United States are the largest regional investors, accounting in 2014 for 20 percent and 17 percent of global investments.

In 2014, China was the fourth largest investor in Africa, making up 6.1 percent of global investments behind France (18.3 percent), Greece (10 percent), and the United States (nine percent).

But China's investments in Africa may expand considerably over the next several years, according to the report. Global investments in Africa fell seven percent from 2014 to 2015, with Middle Africa feeling the biggest hit. But Chinese investment into Middle Africa nearly doubled from $350 billion in 2014 to $630 billion in 2015.

Chinese investment in Africa is motivated by resource extraction. Of the total $77.47 billion China invested in Africa between 2005 and 2015, 42 percent ($32.63 billion) was invested in metals and 35 percent ($27.31 billion) into energy. Natural resource contracts made up four out of the five largest investment deals.

China still trails behind other countries in Africa greenfield investments. China invested $6.42 billion in Africa from 2013 to 2014, while the United States and France led investments over that period with of $21 billion and $10.57 billion, respectively. "China's greenfield investments suggest that Chinese firms are diversifying their interests in Africa," said the report, "as there has been a marked increase in manufacturing projects."

Europe, the United States, and Canada have become major destinations for Chinese foreign direct investment over the last decade, receiving 43.25 percent of China's total global FDI for a total of $297.40 billion. But China's share of foreign investment in North America and Europe between 2005 and 2014 was less than five percent.

The U.S. is the largest destination for Chinese FDI in the world, drawing $95.41 billion or 13.88 percent of all Chinese investment since 2005. But China accounted for less than one percent of FDI into the U.S. in 2014. The Netherlands and Japan constituted shares of 35.14 percent and 30.48 percent, respectively.

In recent years, China has expanded its investment focus from resources and raw materials to strategic acquisitions intended to increase the market competitiveness of Chinese products and companies. From 2011 to 2015, Chinese firms invested $22.49 billion in the European and North American transportation sectors.

Chinese pork producer Shuanghui acquired American pork producer Smithfield for $7.1 billion in 2013 to glean insight into the operational, managerial, and production aspects of Smithfield's food-safety management system. "Such investments indicate," the report concluded, "that Chinese firms are navigating overseas investment with strategic intent, as China aims to transition to an innovation-based economy."

Govt outlines plans to make TZ the best investment destination

Dar es Salaam. Industry, Trade and Investments minister Charles Mwijage has said it was high time Tanzania highlighted its investment opportunities before the international stage in a bid to enhance its business climate.

Mr Mwijage said he has drawn an inspiration from the current branding of Africa as "the next investment destination.''

Speaking at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) and the Oxford Business Group (OBG), the minister said Tanzania was now better positioned in terms of investments.

He was banking on the recent discoveries of natural gas and efforts by the government to accelerate industrialisation, noting that the two aspects were expanding the scope for foreign investment in the country.

The signing of the MoU means that TIC will provide research support to the Oxford Business School in-country team as it begins collecting data for 'The Report: Tanzania 2017', which will be an analysis on the country's investment and business environment.

The report will explore in detail the opportunities and challenges facing foreign investors in the East African Community's second largest economy.

OBG is a global publishing and research firm, which publishes economic intelligence on the markets of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin and Central America and the Caribbean.

TIC's acting executive director Clifford Tandari, said; "Whereas in the past, we have relied on forums and similar events to update investors on Tanzania's emerging opportunities."

He added; "Oxford Business Group's publication will act as a key channel for communicating data and analysis relating to the country's economy in both hard copy, digital format and even video clips, enabling the world to see what our leaders have to say."

Chengdu Is Selected as One of 27 Must-visit Tourist Destinations in 2017 and Becomes the Only One In the Whole Nation

Recently, Chengdu is selected to be one of 21 must-visit tourist destinations in 2017, which is newest launched by the tourist magazine, National Geographic Traveler issued by National Geographic Society, and becomes the only one tourist destination on the list in our country. It is known that the editor of this magazine carefully chose 7 tourist destinations and classified them into three kinds: city, nature and culture. Chengdu was listed as the culture type of tourist destination together with other tourist destinations including Kanton Uri in Switzerland, Georgia State in America, cradle of mankind in South Africa, etc. The urban vitality, historical civilization and food culture in Chengdu are the reasons why it is on the list.

John Krich, the famous columnist and the winner of Hemingway Award, said, "The vibrant Chengdu is becoming the source of Chinese vitality." This magazine strengthens that Chengdu is the center of rapid development in western China. As the city joining "Silk Road Economic Belt" and "Yangtze River Economic Belt", Chengdu actively follows the "One Belt One Road" strategy.

At the same time, it can be still seen that the history and modern civilization add radiance and beauty to each other in Chengdu. As an ancient city with over 2000 years of history, Chengdu owns 5 world heritages and is one of 24 famous historic and cultural cities firstly published by the State Council. It keeps the oldest urban heritages in Asia. "Although Chengdu is not the most typical city for experiencing exotic oriental cultures, it is the only one city whose name, location and main layout are not changed from beginning to end in China in over 2000 years."

The reasons why Chengdu is on the list also include its food culture. In recent years, as Chengdu is the birthplace and center of Sichuan cuisine, the feature "one dish on one grid, 100 tastes for 100 dishes" of Sichuan cuisine and the distinct characteristic and absorbing style of food culture in Chengdu make this city card understood, known and loved by more and more people. In 2010, Chengdu was officially approved to join the Creative Cities Network of UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific And Cultural Organization). Since then, it becomes the first world "gourmet capital" in Asia.

There are over 30 restaurants of "Chinese famous snacks", 13 restaurants of "China time-honored brands", and over 10 famous food streets such as Wide and Narrow Valley, Jinli and Wenshufang. Except for Sichuan cuisine, no matter it is the cuisines outside the province, such as Cantonese cuisine, Huaiyang cuisine and Hunan cuisine, or the catering brands in the countries and regions such as America, Italy, Germany, France, Thailand, Korea and Japan successively become one part of this "gourmet capital" and provide more choices for the citizens and tourists.

2016 Beach AFCON Chietain: Lagos Hosting Well, Will Do More

By James Agberebi at Eko Atlantic Beach, Lagos:‎

Chairman, Venue and Facility, 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, Bolaji Yusuf, has expressed satisfaction with level of success recorded in the first three days of the tournament Completesportsnigeria.com reports.‎

Following the completion of the group stage games on Thursday, the tournament will resume on Saturday December  17 with hosts Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal and Egypt slogging it out in the semi-finals.

In his assessment, Yusuf  thumbed up everyone who have been involved in making the tournament a success so far.

He also reserved special praise for the Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, for the role he has played in the hosting of the 2016 Beach Soccer AFCON.

"So far, we've not done badly. Though there is room for improvement, but with what we've done, it shows we can host the whole world," Yusuf told Completesportsnigeria.com.

"I will say kudos to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode. He has given support to the LOC and for the first time, they set up an host city committee who did a complimentary service to make sure Lagos is showcased in a positive light, and we have not disappointed the governor.

"I believe Lagos will be a sport destination, particularly talking about beach. And it's not only beach soccer, you can talk about beach volleyball, beach handball. And with the plans being made, there will be beach arenas very soon in Lagos."

On the growth of Beach Soccer in Lagos and the possibility of the state hosting the Beach Soccer World Cup, Yusuf said: "We have a beach soccer league that is being organised by the Lagos FA. And Lagos is among the states in Nigeria to have a beach soccer committee which is putting up a beach soccer league which is not that robust for now.

"But all we have to do is to improve on what we have. And to think that they play beach soccer in Abuja, I believe it will make headway in Lagos."

He added:"In terms of population, resources, both human and financial resources, Lagos can stand among the first four in Africa. And we should be judged by world standard and not just by the Africa Cup of Nations which is a stepping stone.

"So I believe better things are ahead, and who says the next Beach Soccer World Cup cannot be hosted in Lagos."

And on the performance of Nigeria Super Sand Eagles so far in this year's Beach Soccer AFCON Yusuf said:"Like I have said before, we need a lot of improvement. Most of our coaches need to go for refresher courses. Everyday, new techniques and technologies emerge in the game. So we have to refresh our coaches and also we have to make the game popular."

Thrills and spills as vintage biplanes complete Africa odyssey

Baragwanath, South Africa: Like an aviator from another century, Lita Oppegard, 68, climbs out of her biplane on a grass airstrip near Johannesburg — one more stage safely completed in an epic journey down the length of Africa.

Seven vintage planes — from a total of 11 starters — will on Friday finish the 13,000-kilometre adventure flying from the Greek island of Crete to Cape Town.

The 36-day challenge has been packed with incident, including dangerous crashes, wrecked planes, lost pilots and the whole fleet being detained in Ethiopia in a dispute over paperwork.

Along the way, they have landed beside the Egyptian pyramids, soared past Mount Kilimanjaro, gazed down on wildlife across the Kenyan plains and heard the roar of the mighty Victoria Falls below.

"It has been a wonderful adventure and we had so much fun and the people we met made it really special," Oppegard, from Alaska, told journalists at Baragwanath airfield as the rally hopped across South Africa to its final destination.

"I thought Alaska is huge, but flying through much of Africa like we've been through I cannot even begin to get into my head how vast this continent is. It is just sheer, utter wilderness ... beautiful."

The teams became the first group of aircraft to land at Egypt's Giza pyramids in 80 years and were detained for two days in rough conditions in Ethiopia after a mix-up with their flight permits.

An Irish father and daughter team escaped unhurt after suffering a total engine failure and crash-landing their 1930s biplane on the leg to Nairobi.

The rally has also attracted international headlines after maverick 72-year-old British pilot Maurice Kirk went missing — twice.

After being released from Ethiopia, he landed in conflict-torn South Sudan instead of Kenya.

He told how he was robbed, beaten up and briefly jailed as he fell seriously ill from malaria and sepsis.

But Kirk has vowed to find and repair his wrecked single-engine 1943 Piper Club, which lost its propeller and one of its legs in the emergency landing.

"One way or another, I am in a bit of a jam," he told the British press last weekend from a hotel in the capital city of Juba, where he was taken under military escort.

Sam Rutherford, the rally organiser, said the event had been a huge success, but admitted "I'll breathe a massive sigh of relief when we get to Cape Town."

The planes are mostly open to the elements and have only basic navigation and safety equipment — demanding high skills from the often elderly pilots who have landed in tight spots including on the edge of the Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania.

"With an open cockpit, you become one with the environment," said Ingo Presser, 72, from Germany, his eyes shining with excitement after landing his 1936 Bucker Bu-131 at Baragwanath.

"You know immediately when the plane is flying perfectly and when there is a problem, you feel it."

Presser spent 36 years flying modern planes equipped with modern technology, but said he loves the smell of oil splashing on his goggles and the challenge of navigating by map.

"(In my career) I used to fly an Airbus in the morning and fly this one the afternoon, just for the pleasure of flying," he said.

For American Keith Kossuth, the journey has been full of testing moments as he had little experience of his plane — but he was determined to complete the rally.

"I just got the plane, but I've been dreaming of having it for over 12 years," said Kossuth, who confessed that his specialism is actually old motorcycles rather than old planes.

"I did four landings with the guy that owned the plane and then four landings by myself and then it was 'OK, there you go'.

"I was too confident," he said, recalling how his plane had gone into a downwards spin near Zanzibar before he just got it back under control.

Oppegard flew in the "Vintage Air Rally" with her husband Nicholas — a former commercial pilot — in an eight-cylinder Travel Air 4000 plane built in 1928.

Nicholas Oppegard said the journey was the highlight of his life spent in the air, and that the experience that produced a strong bond among the intrepid participants.

"We didn't know each other and there we were heading together to do the greatest odyssey of our lives ... honouring the guys who opened up the skies of Africa to the world," he said.

"This is a joy, this is a privilege (and) if along the way we could inspire one child to look up and say the sky is not the limit then it's been worth this trip."
