South Africa: Falling for Tugela Falls

Having been stuck overnight in the rangers' cabin in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal, my heart sinks when it becomes clear the thick fog surrounding the small shelter still holds fast. I climb off my bunk and walk out into the cold whiteness. The cloud at this height is so thick I can barely see one metre in front of me here.

I walk over to the start of the mountain trail, but the rocky pathway disappears into the milky swirl, so I decide to delay for an hour. Back in the cabin, I sit down with the park ranger, Mokabe, in front of the small gas burner beside his wooden desk.

After some time, Mokabe looks out the window, gives the glass a rub with his sleeve and tells me the cloud is about to clear. I glance out and only see a blanket of mist, but he seems certain, so I lace up my boots, shoulder my pack and head out into the Drakensberg Mountains.

The trail is steep and uneven, strewn with rocks. The mist gradually dissipates as the sun burns it away, and I glimpse the landscape below — vast and green, with distant hills and valleys, and small iridescent blue lakes sparkling in the sun.

The higher I climb, the more frequent these holes in the cloud become, until finally all that's left is a thin veil of mist clinging to the cliff face. The views from the narrow, winding cliff-side path are breathtaking and it takes great concentration not to let my eyes linger too long else I misplace a foot and tumble to my doom. Eventually, I enter a narrow gorge where the path stops and bare rock and boulders block my way. I look around for a minute before I notice the metal ladder.

The chain ladder hangs from the rock above. It's impossible to see the top as it slips out of sight past an overhang. I start to climb, the rungs cold and my sweaty palms giving little grip against the smooth metal. But I reach the overhang at about 50ft and see this swinging rungs continues even further still.

I scramble to the highest point and look over the flat top of the mountain. It's sparse and cold, almost like Scottish moorland. A river cuts through the centre of my view, running away to the east and disappearing. It's sapphire blue. This seems to be the right way so I follow the water downstream.

After 30 minutes, I can hear a dull roar coming from somewhere ahead. I see a man wrapped in a red tribesman's cloak, sitting smoking on a rock in the middle of the river, which spreads out around him. The fog has returned and I walk to where the rock ends and look over, but there's nothing but whiteness. I sit on the edge and swing my legs over, I hear the man chuckle to himself and suddenly the cloud clears and I'm left aghast as the drop appears directly below me.

The water falls 3,110ft until it meets the wide blue river below, which snakes off into the distance. I'd climbed to the very top of the second highest waterfall in the world, Tugela Falls. Yet as soon as the view had appeared, it was again obscured by cloud, and I never saw it again. But that moment was worth it all.

Namibia growing as an exotic destination for African travellers

Africa's business and leisure travellers are searching for local travel, meetings, and conference options with expensive travel visas and fears of terrorism across Europe and the East. Exotic destinations are becoming a stretch on the purse-strings and looking for local destinations are fast becoming a major trend. Namibia is such a destination, with the country becoming an appealing option for the leisure and conference markets.

Growth in arrivals Nicolae Tambrescu, regional and domestic operations and marketing for Namibia, Africa and Middle East at Namibia Tourism Board, confirms the growth reflected by Namibian Airports Company figures for 2015 when Windhoek airport handled 773,721 passengers and 14,940 aircraft movements.

Supporting airlines are Air Namibia, South African Airlines, TAAG Angola, Airlink, Condor, South African Express and British Airways (Comair) that service routes to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Luanda, amongst others in Africa, as well as to Europe through Frankfurt Airport in Germany. Walvis Bay Airport is a second major airport in Namibia, handling over 20,000 aircraft and about 100,000 passengers in 2015, operating daily flights to Windhoek, Johannesburg, and Cape Town.

Walvis Bay Airport is undergoing a total revamp and is set to be Namibia's second international airport by the end of 2016. According to Tambrescu, South African arrivals continue to increase at 12-13% annually, reaching over 5 00,000 in 2015.

But it's not only South Africans who are realising the value of Namibia. Arrivals from Angola and Zambia account for about 700,000, whilst visitor figures from Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom have reached as many as three hundred thousand per annum.

A surge in corporate travel Recent reports confirm the arrival of KLM, Qatar and Ethiopia Airlines, confirming the interest of visitors to the country. Tambrescu explains that there is an upsurge in corporate travel from SADC, but there is room for improvement. "It is important to inform the consumers of various types of destinations and activities, tourism campaigns and incentives, through various communication tools and, in the past years, we have seen growth and uniformity throughout the year, positive signs for Namibia."A playground of attractions Dean van Rooyen, general manager at BON Hotel Swakopmund, boasts that Namibia, especially the coastal town of Swakopmund, has much to offer. "Less than an hour's drive from the Walvis Bay airport, the sand dunes and ocean offer a playground of attractions for corporate and leisure seekers and the historical value draws many tourists from Germany and Europe.

Namibia, Sossusvlei

With such a variety on offer, Swakop is becoming increasingly popular for conference groups, team-building, and our leisure market is growing too. Of course, we also enjoy the big-time Hollywood movie shoots. The exchange rate and unusual locations are huge drawcards for production companies."

If one has to look at exotic travel options for South Africans on our current exchange rate, we have limited choice for value – perhaps Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia or even Mauritius, but Namibia… now there's a thought.

Nigerians are the most frequent African visitors to Dubai

Recently, the 2016 edition of one of Africa's largest travel fair, Akwaaba Africa Travel Market took pace in Lagos, Nigeria. The event was a gathering of stakeholders and players in the African travel and tourism sector. One of the major highlights of the event was the return of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) to commence its commitment to the African market. At the event, it was revealed that Nigeria had the most frequent African visitors to Dubai.

"Nigeria made up 60 per cent of clients of Time Hotels and Arabian Falcons, a leading property company in the Middle East. Nigeria also accounted for about 127,000 overnight visitors in 2015, making Nigeria one of the top 20 source markets that year," said Stella Fubara Obinwa, Regional Director for Africa, DCTM.

stella-obinwaStella Fubara Obinwa

What did Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing do differently this year?

DTCM arrived Nigeria with 10 tour operators and Destination Management Companies (DMCs), which included airlines, hotels, tour agencies and the world's largest indoor theme park, the IMG Worlds of Adventure. The whole point was to create a platform where suppliers and buyers get to meet, to improve their businesses.

They also tried to change the misconception that Dubai is expensive or it is only for shopping.

"Yes, it is a luxury destination but it is very affordable, and there are thousands of more places to visit beyond the Burj Khalifa and Desert Safari, said Obinwa.

The DTCM partners also came along to the Akwaaba to give incentives to help travel businesses grow. Of course, luxury shopping is a given in Dubai and at phenomenal market value. Shoppers may be happy to know that the next Dubai Shopping Festival starts early by December 26 until January 2017. Discounts will be extremely attractive for visitors, with about 600 incredible giveaways to shoppers," Obinwa said further.

Why Dubai is a top destination for Nigerians

According to Obinwa, to start with, Dubai takes the least time to get to by flight, just six hours, instead of 14 hours to other destinations. There are the thousands of posh restaurants, luxury hotels, parks, museums, resorts and family entertainment centres that serve as perfect getaway cum exquisite business spots for destination events. "Twenty luxury event planners from Nigeria, who were hosted by Dubai Tourism, Middle East Tourism and Red Apple in October 2016, can testify to the wow factor Dubai effortlessly offers, " said Obinwa.

Africa / 25 November 2016, 12:01pm

Xinhua

Phillipe Corsaletti, one of the local coordinators of the global event, said that during the five-day air fly, pilots will be flying over the Tanzania's national parks and other tourist attractions.

Arusha - Tanzania is expected to use the vintage air rally, which involves experienced pilots from across the world, to market its tourism destinations.

The global event, scheduled to start on November 28, is expected to involve more than 40 experienced pilots from six countries including Germany, South Africa, United Kingdom, the Untied States, Belgium and Russia.

Phillipe Corsaletti, one of the local coordinators of the global event, said that during the five-day air fly, pilots will be flying over the Tanzania's national parks and other tourist attractions.

He said that the air rally involves old aircraft of as old as 1920's which will be operated by pilots from various parts of the world. "The first-ever vintage air rally is being followed by thousands of people around the globe...it will help to promote national tourism on a global level," said Corsaletti.

Corsaletti, who is the general manager of Puma Energy Tanzania, said that as the main host of the amazing adventure they have also been supported by the government through the Tanzania Tourists Board (TTB) and other relevant bodies to ensure that available tourists' attractions are known worldwide.

He said the rally is also meant to raise funds for various community-related issues globally through Unicef, Bird Life International and Seed Bombing.

The institutions he said are involved in activities which have direct impact to nature conservation since it affects human life prosperity. "Tanzania is one of the few countries in the world where the rally will take place. We welcome the public to be part of this historic event when the vintage planes pass their areas as well as use the event to promote the country's tourism," he noted.

He said that Puma is prepared to host the team of pilots and provide all necessary required services in order to ensure reliable flights.

He said the company has knowledgeable technicians who can re-fill fuel in the vintage aircraft since it also provides the same services in eight airports in the country including Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) and Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA).

He said that in Tanzania the vintage aircraft will refuel at Kilimanjaro, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Dodoma and Songwe. Raymond Tungaraza, Puma aviation operations manager, said the rally commenced on November 12, 2016 at Crete in Greece, and that the entire trip will take 35 days covering 10 countries including Greece, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa.

Tungaraza said the rally aims at testing pilot's skills and the old aircraft. Puma Energy is the official fuel sponsor for the 2016 vintage air rally.

Feature: Uganda strives to become Africa's top birding destination

    By Ronald Ssekandi, Yuan Qing

ENTEBBE, Uganda, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Wendy Maltinsky is a birder from the United Kingdom. Her passion for birds stems from her family back in Scotland. They have moved around the world in search for unique bird species.

Maltinsky is in Uganda to attend the first ever African Birding Expo that has attracted over 100 birders from Europe and the United States.

The event, which opened on Friday, is held here 40km south of the capital Kampala, on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Uganda is using the expo to showcase that it is a birding paradise.

The country is endowed with over 1,000 bird species that account for 10 percent of the globe's total bird species and 50 percent of Africa's bird species population.

All this is possible because of the richly diverse habitats from the scenic shores of Lake Victoria to the lush forests of the Albertine Rift and the banks of River Nile.

Uganda was declared Africa's Preferred Birding Destination in 2013 after Africa Bird Club voted two of its birding sites among the top 10 birders' destinations on the continent.

"The birds here are very brightly colored, we do have some of those in the United Kingdom but not as much as here," Maltinsky told Xinhua in an interview.

Laura Kammermeier, a travel writer from New York, described her birding experience in Uganda as magical.

"They (birds) are so many, they have beautiful shapes and colours. They are really exciting to see and easy to find," she said.

Nate Swick of the American Birding Association urged Uganda to fully exploit the country's potential.

Uganda Tourism Board, a government agency charged with promoting tourism, argues that birding is one of the most important tourist activities in the world, garnering chunks of money for countries that have given it priority.

The agency argued that the country now needs to market birding to reap from the tourist attraction.

Tourism now ranks as Uganda's top foreign exchange earner, contributing over 23 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product. Enditem

Cape Town Is Not The Most Popular Destination In Africa

Africa is a pretty big place – and people continuously travel to the continent for a variety of reasons.

But South Africa still remains one of the top destinations, as we are both a fine tourist destination and a lucrative financial hub.

    This, from Quartz:

Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban are expected to attract close to six million visitors in 2016 alone, according to the newly-released 2016 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.

The MasterCard index ranked 132 most visited countries in the world, with 13 African cities appearing in the list.

So you want to know what the most visited cities in Africa are? Fine:

With 3.6 million visitors, Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa, is set to be the most popular destination in Africa for the fourth year.

Most of the international visitors to Johannesburg come from London, Harare, Frankfurt, Maputo and Paris, and are expected to spend $1.73 billion by end of 2016.

Across the continent, Cairo is the second most visited African city with 1.55 million visitors, while trips to cities like Casablanca in Morocco and Nairobi saw the highest annual growth at 14.5% and 12.3% respectively.

Beira, Mozambique's second largest city and home to the country's busy port, also grew by 4.7% attracting close to 10,000 people.

If you're more of a numbers person, here's a graph:

    screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-8-54-45-am

No doubt, tourism is a massive source of income for many on the continent, although political unrest and terrorist attacks have taken its toll on many of the beautiful countries in the north and east.

But despite that, the continent's hotel industry has witnessed a healthy boost, with $1.7 billion expected to be invested in the industry in Sub-Saharan Africa next year – and here's a way to travel cheaper, faster.

Man, it's about time we had some positivity about Africa – we deserve so much better.

NAIROBI, Kenya - Bloomberg has announced the launch of Bloomberg.com/Africa, a regional edition of Bloomberg's flagship digital destination designed to serve the continent's growing audience of business and financial professionals.

    Justin B. Smith

    Justin B. Smith

Bloomberg Media CEO Justin B. Smith unveiled the new edition at the second Bloomberg 'Africa Business Media Innovators' (ABMI) forum today in Naivasha, Kenya, which convened media, technology and business influencers from 11 countries - including nine African nations - to explore the role business and financial journalism plays in bringing accountability, transparency and investment to African economies.

Bloomberg.com/Africa will combine the resources of Bloomberg's more than 100-strong editorial team across seven bureaus in Africa, as well as Bloomberg's global team of more than 2,600 reporters and analysts. It is the latest in a series of regionally-focused editorial platforms built to serve the growing audience of business and financial consumers seeking stories on global markets told through a local lens.

Speaking at ABMI 2016 in Kenya, Smith said: "Our mission is to build the leading multi-platform global business and financial media company and delivering more rele vant stories to our global audiences via localised platforms is central to our strategy. In the last year, we have launched regional sites in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, re-launched our Japanese language website and entered into an ambitious multi-platform partnership in India. We are excited to now expand our reach across Africa's vibrant and growing economies."

"Africa is playing an increasingly significant role in the global economy," said Antony Sguazzin, managing editor Bloomberg, Sub-Saharan Africa. "With the launch of this dedicated regional digital platform, we are establishing a home to showcase the best of Bloomberg's rich content on the people, companies, politics and economies shaping the continent."

Bloomberg.com/Africa will be powered by Javelin, Bloomberg Digital's new article and template design that was unveiled recently with the launch of Bloomberg Technology. Ghana signs destination agreement with South Africa

saThe Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA) has signed a multiple destination agreement concept with South Africa.

The concept is aimed at promoting the tourism drive between the two countries, which would enable tourists to tour major cities in the two countries.

Mrs Nancy O. Sam, the President of TOUGHA, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at the just ended Akwaaba Travel Market event in Lagos, said the Union for the past two years has been sensitising countries in Africa to do the multiple destination concepts.

She said "it is also for promoting each other that when you go to South Africa information desk they will not sell only South Africa but will also showcase Ghana."

"We are encouraging this destination whereby the monies that come to Africa stays in Africa," she said.

She said "we all know that Ghana is the gate way to West Africa and if you a serious tour operator or tourism personnel or a country that really want to penetrate into West Africa, Ghana is the country to look at which South Africa has identified.

Mrs Sam said South Africa has identified the potential of flying from Washington to Accra which makes their market very big.

She said South Africa has started with Ghana and other countries are coming on board come.

The President of TOUGHA said Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana have embraced the concept and believe it was a very good concept for Africans to sell Africa.

In recent years, South African Tourism has been consis tently engaging with travel agencies and tour operators in both countries with the aim of forging a closer working relationship.

This consistent marketing drive and engagements with the trade partners has been made possible through regular road shows and trade workshops in cities like Accra, Kumasi, Port-Harcourt, Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria.

Classic American Game Gets a South African Update

    JOHANNESBURG —

Ever fancied owning world famous South African landmarks like Table Mountain, the Kruger game park and Robben Island, where former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned? Well, players of the internationally popular Monopoly property purchase board game can now do so. The American toy company that manufactures the game, Hasbro, recently released Monopoly Mzansi. Mzansi is a Xhosa word meaning South Africa. It's the first version of the game to fully represent modern-day, democratic South Africa.

South Africans have been playing Monopoly since the early 1960s. Hasbro launched the board game in the United States in 1903. Millions around the world still enjoy it.

Players roll dice, move along the board and get to buy various properties. The player who builds the most wealth wins; the losers go bankrupt through injudicious purchases, and high rentals when landing on a place owned by a rival.

In South Africa, older versions of the game reflected a racially-segregated country, including apartheid-era streets and landmarks.

Hasbro's local marketing manager, Siphiwe Thabethe, said the Mzansi edition of Monopoly represents modern South Africa.

Places for sale on the board now include Johannesburg's Maboneng Precinct, where trendy stores sell African fashion and music.

"The key new ones are Maboneng; Vilakazi Street in Soweto. So it's really a mixture of what is new and what's bubbling in South Africa right now. My favorite location I'd have to say is Vilakazi Street, with the [anti-apartheid] history that comes with that, Nelson Mandela [lived there]," said Thabethe. "We are a great country; we've got lots of attractions. So we're really a tourist destination as well. So it's about celebrating what's proudly South African."

Thabethe's also excited about the inclusion on the Monopoly board of Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo airport; most tourists' first experience of South Africa.

Another property for sale is in Johannesburg's Parkhurst suburb: Fourth Avenue, a strip of restaurants, boutiques and bars.

Pub owner Jack Breusegem said Fourth Avenue deserves its place in the latest Monopoly variant because it's one of South Africa's best entertainment venues.

"You've got a whole variety of things [here] from sushi to a steakhouse to craft beers. People want that homely thing, that village feel, where you can come in and you know your car's safe, you're safe. I think it's fantastic that they (Hasbro) actually thought about us and put us on the board," said Breusegem.

At a store in Sandton Square, a shopping space dominated by a huge statue of Nelson Mandela, an oinking, tail-wagging pig and a wide-eyed plastic soldier beating a drum compete for children's attention as they race into a toy store in Johannesburg.

One of the places featured on the board of Monopoly Mzansi is Sandton Square, where a huge statue of Nelson Mandela is a major attraction. (D. Taylor for VOA)

But their father's here to buy 'Monopoly Mzansi.'

The square is itself a feature on the new Monopoly board,

Hamley's toy store manager Bridget Green said customers are "thrilled" to finally have a version of Monopoly to which they feel "connected."

"It's been moving really nicely. Also, I think the fact that it's Mzansi, so it's obviously South African-based, which makes it quite a puller. Everybody's enjoying it and it's been a great success," said Green.

From the Botanical Gardens in Cape Town to Durban's Golden Mile and game parks filled with lions and elephants, they're all up for grabs when playing Monopoly Mzansi - if you have the millions of fake rands required. But beware: landing on Table Mountain, if it's owned by a rival player, could just as easily bankrupt you.

Jerusalem’s Latest Argument Over History Is About Fried Innards

Makam closed long ago, but Mr. Amiga's son Shimon, 34, now runs a gluten-free falafel joint on the premises. A sign on the wall bears the insignia of the Council for Conservation of Heritage Sites in Israel, which certifies the spot as the birthplace of "the famous meorav Yerushalmi."

But a rival steakhouse, which opened across the street in 1970, also claims to have created the Jerusalem mixed grill.

That steakhouse — called Hatzot, Hebrew for midnight — sports a homemade sign above the takeout window proclaiming it to be the home of "the original meorav Yerushalmi."

Still gritty in parts , the district has been gentrifying and now includes trendy bars, artisanal bakeries and gourmet restaurants. Modern twists like a seafood meorav have been turning up on menus around the country, and Hatzot has been offering a vegan version with mushrooms and tofu.

The very best gorilla tracking options for you

Tracking for gorillas is an unforgettable wildlife experience, one you should attempt at least once in your lifetime. The thrill and exhilaration of seeing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is really a privilege, leaving you with magical memories that last a lifetime.

    bwindi-gorilla

Mountain gorillas can be seen in Rwanda, at the Volcanoes National Park, and in Uganda, both at Bwindi National Park and Mgahinga National Park, though Mgahinga has inconsistent sightings a s the gorilla groups tend to move around, either moving to the Democratic Republic of Congo, or Rwanda.

So how do you choose where to go? Which one will suit your particular requirements? Rwanda or Uganda? Let us examine gorilla tracking in both areas.

    Rwanda

The biggest advantage here is the distance to the park from Kigali airport – it is a 2-3 hour drive on tarmac roads so one can easily drive to the park, do the trek and drive back to the airport, all in one day. However, it is recommended to spend at least one night at a lodge near or in the park, and do the trek the next day when you are fresh and rested, making it a two day visit at the very minimum. There are many lodging options available, though most are on the higher end of the spectrum.

    parc-national-des-volcans

The cost of the permit doesn t come cheap, US$750 per person, and although more permits are issued as Rwanda has twice the number of habituated mountain gorillas as Uganda, the permits are sold quicker, so one needs to book well in advance. Taking into account the higher fee for the permit, together with the costlier lodging options, one may feel that the total cost for the gorilla experience in Rwanda will be much higher, however this is compensated for by the less expensive vehicle costs for shorter transfer to the park and back, and also by the fact that one only needs to spend a night or two at the lodge.

Permits are allocated based on the age, health and fitness level of the trekker, as well as on other interests. The allocation of groups is done after the briefing, and those who are stronger and more adventurous are allotted to hard families, while those that are elderly, weaker or less physically fit are allotted to groups that are close by and easier to trek to.

    volcanoes-national-park

There are more chances that you will have shorter distances to hike to see the gorillas in Rwanda, but there are no guarantees as one may h ave to trek further sometimes, but of course it is worth it!

The gorilla groups in Rwanda are the most wholly habituated and are found in bamboo rather than dense forest, making photography much easier.

The trekking experience is more charming here, with tea/coffee being served before the trek while you are entertained by a traditional dance troupe.

    rwanda-dancers

Although you can also trek for golden monkeys here, there is no 'big five' wildlife experience available, so if you are looking to do a longer safari, you may need to combine Rwanda with either Kenya or Tanzania.

    Uganda

One of the biggest drawbacks here is the travel time from either Entebbe airport or Kampala to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – the distance is 500km and takes about 8 hours to drive. Most people opt to do this in two days, breaking their journey at Lake Mburo National Park. Thus the minimum number of days needed here is three – one to drive there, one for the trek and the third day to drive back. Flights to Bwindi are now available, although the flights are on the pricey side.

    bwindi

Although the drive is long, it is an enchanting drive, offering visitors intimate views of rural Africa and beautiful terraced mountains with flowing rivers, perfect for the tourist wishing to see more of the people and cu lture of the country.

The permits are much cheaper at US$600 per person and they even go down to US$350 per person during the low season. The permits are allocated on a first come first serve basis and they do not take into account the age or fitness level of the trekker. However, taking into consideration the long journey to Bwindi, the fact that you have to spend two nights at the lodge and the return journey, the costs, despite the lower fees for the gorilla permit, may work out to be the same or even more than for Rwanda.

The terrain at Bwindi is more mountainous and the jungle is quite thick (hence the name Impenetrable), so the trek can be more arduous and physically taxing.

    bwindi-gorilla

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is stunningly beautiful, however there may be less visibility due to the tall grass, and so less photographic opportunities.

Uganda has more to offer than only gorillas, it has the best chimpanzee tracking in all of Africa, as well as other wildlife areas like Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo National Park, in addition to areas of natural beauty like Murchison Falls, so one can combine all these for a longer trip.

The takeaway from this is that, Rwanda is a good choice if one wants to make a quick visit to see the gorillas, and also for those who are apprehensive about the physical trekking itself. For those who are more adventurous, and for those looking for a longer stay, maybe combining gorilla tracking with chimp tracking, or culture, walking, game viewing etc, then Uganda is the best choice.

    volcanoes

A lot of visitors opt to do both – they start out with a visit to the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, then drive from here to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (nearer to Rwanda than Kampala o r Entebbe), and do the second trek here.

Wherever you track for gorillas, rest assured that the hour you spend with them, will be one of the most magical moments of your life and will live in your memories forever.

Six charities doing it for the birds

South Africa ranks as one of the top birding destinations in the world with a recorded 858 species gracing our skies and seas, including 31 birds found nowhere else on earth. From the charismatic African penguin to the iconic ground-hornbill, South Africa is truly a birder's paradise.

But a number of our species are under threat from habitat encroachment and human intervention. The MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet Fundraising Programme works with some inspiring organisations whose efforts are helping to conserve these birds for our future generations.

    1. Mabula Ground-Hornbill Project

The southern ground-hornbill is considered Vulnerable throughout Africa by the IUCN, but within South Africa specifically, this classification has been up listed to Endangered. It is estimated that there are only around 1,500 ground-hornbills left in South Africa. Their decline is mostly due to habitat loss from the agriculture industry but also poisoning.

Ground hornbill, Kruger National Park, South Africa

Ground hornbill, Kruger National Park, South A frica ©flowcomm

The Mabula Ground-Hornbill Project is working to slow the decline by assisting in rearing second-hatched chicks that usually die of starvation in wild nests before releasing them back into the bush. Some of these chicks are also reintroduced into areas where they have become locally extinct after the area's initial issues have been taken care of. They also work to spread public awareness about the threats facing the species as well as conduct research on their behaviour and genetics in an effort to better understand how to protect them.

    2. BirdLife South Africa

Birdlife South Africa is part of the BirdLife International Partnership. With 125 bird species being listed in the Eskom Red Data Book of Birds of South Africa, the conservation of these birds is one of their most important responsibilities. BirdLife South Africa focuses their work on protecting 'Important Bird Areas' which hold large numbers of threatened species. They also work together with local communities on environmental education, training birding guides and managing birdwatching routes.

    birdlifesa_myplanet

To date, the work of Birdlife South Africa has helped to reduce the mortalities of albatrosses and petrels from long-line fishing by 85%, alongside many other notable achievements.

    3. SAMREC

Based in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve in Port Elizabeth, SAMREC's mission is to rescue and rehabilitate seabirds with the end goal of releasing them back into the wild as quickly as possible. Focusing on the conservation of African penguins, their aim is to try help reverse their declining population numbers. It is estimated that in the last 50 years the African penguin population has declined by a shocking 91%, with researchers predicting that the species will be extinct in the wild by 2025.

    4. VulPro

African vulture conservation is a difficult task because the factors facing this threatened species are extremely varied. Birds are poisoned by farmers or poachers who either lace animal carcasses to intentionally kill vultures or poison them by mistake as the birds ingest poison intended to kill other animals when scavenging. A single poisoned elephant can kill hundreds of vultures. Even power lines pose a major threat to vultures.

VulPro is a major player in helping to protect vultures. They rescue and rehabilitate vultures that are found in the wild before releasing those who are able to survive. They are also involved in conservation breeding of vultures and reintroduce these individuals into the wild to supplement the Cape vulture population. An important aspect of what VulPro does is to create educational and awareness programmes and assist with mitigating farmer-vulture conflicts that are threatening the survival of the species.

    5. African Raptor Trust

Based in KwaZulu-Natal, the African Raptor Trust is an NGO that provides legal and financial framework for non-profit work undertaken on behalf of raptor species in need. It supports vital aspects of raptor conservation including the rescue and rehabilitation of injured and sick birds of prey, raptor research, conservation breeding and raptor education and public awareness outreach. There are 81 raptor species, but human activities have threatened their survival, with just under a quarter of raptors listed as Rare, Threatened or Endangered.

    7. SANCCOB

SANCCOB works towards the protection of Southern Africa's coastal birds. To date they have helped to treat over 85,000 seabirds, many of which are classified as Vulnerable. Perhaps best known for their work with oiled penguins, they have pioneered many oiled penguin rehabilitation procedures, saving thousands of birds in the process.

With an estimated 25,000 breeding pairs left in the wild, the population is at approximately 2.5% of the estimated figure of one million breeding pairs, recorded in the early 20th Century. But according to UCT's Animal Demography Unit, the African penguin population is 19% higher today than it would have been, thanks to SANCCOB's efforts. They are also highly involved in rescuing and rehabilitating injured and vulnerable sea birds and spreading public awareness of their plight.
